I'm really pleased that your bones and kidneys are doing well but what a bummer that it's come back. I'm glad that the new drug has offered some hope.

Geoff and I have been to Devon for 2 weeks. My sister and a friend joined us for the first week and then it was just us - lots of walking, art galleries and cake shops! Katy and Will are at the V-Festival this weekend. I took Katy and her friends - nightmare journey as most of the motorway network was clogged up with festival traffic.

Good Luck Sarah. As ever, I'll be thinking of you and Bob, Jane x

Dear Sarah,
I just wanted tp say hi and introduce myself. I've found it fascinating to read your blog. I'm the same age as you, have myeloma, have had a transplant in November '08 and am doing well at the moment. I'm also an ex-teacher and trying to adjust to the loss of my career. I live in Scotland, both in the Highlands and in Edinburgh. However I travel to London occasionally. The last time I went was a few weeks ago with my husband: one of his short stories had been used as a basis for a play -'The Fahrenheit Twins' and we had an amazing night out at the Barbican. I'm contacting you for two reasons. I'm curious about treatment options in London and have wondered whether in the long run we might have to shift there. I don't know whether there is a large enough myeloma population in Scotland to give me access to the best treatments. Secondly I'm also facing a period of re-adjustment and have embarked on a number of creative projects. I guess it could be productive to have contact with someone who is looking at how to spend their time post teaching. I wish you all the best - if you'd like to have some contact with me please let me know.

Hi Sarah.
Hope you have managed to see a little bit of progress, albeit slow.If it's any consolation, we're all getting old so you're not on your own with restricted movement although I appreciate it's much more painful and tiring for you. It must be really annoying to hear about other transplantees who are up and about like nothing ever happened to them.
Complete change of subject - have you seen the film 'The Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus?' It was the one Heath Ledger was filming when he died. It's so whacky - I'm not sure I totally understood it and haven't found many other people who have seen it to ask for their opinion. I'm sure it would have meant more to me if I'd been under the influence! (Terry Giliam was the directorand it has several Monty Python surreal image moments in it.) J x PS Hope that Tom and Rosie are happy in their new phases of life.

Hi Sarah, sorry i have not been intouch recently. I have been inputing the boring old VAT. I think Rosie is right about being useful. It is the whole reason teachers take up the profession, to make a difference and be useful. As for early retirement, you will still remain useful. Just think of all those things you have always wanted to do but never had the time. I bet, like me you have lots of photos that have never seen the light of day? If you haven't got one already, create a montage for that wall that has always looked empty. I guess by now Bob is on summer break? We can not begin to imagine your lives but to the best of our ability you are always in our thoughts and you especially Sarah are an inspiration to us all. Take care Lots of Love Denyse and Tony (Hopkins)

Hi Sarah,
Would definitely concur with Suzie's comment (not that I know anyhting about retirement yet!) Please don't try to keep a brave face all the time - it must be exhausting. I'm so pleased that oyu had that nice lady to chat to - I'm sure you'd already done half of her work by turning up with a list of positives etc.

I certainly hope that you and Bob can get a quality holiday in this summer and if you would like to make an overnight stop or two here you would be more than welcome.

Love Jane x

Hello Sarah,

Lots of positives there really weren't there?! I can identify with the brainstorming bit and it does help, you're right. Good luck with the retirement plans and don't worry about not being 'useful'. Once you have taken the final step and left teaching you will know that you can now concentrate on continuing to get better and staying in remission. Then you'll find a certain relief that comes from having no specific deadlines to meet. And I'm sure people will be knocking on your door asking if you could help with this, arrange that etc. I took early retirement and I've never been busier!! All the best and I'll look out for the next blog.
